This should’ve been Johnny coronating Dave and hailing him as the new king.
Jay was the dagger in this show’s heart.

I know it was during the summer months of 1991. Johnny’s announcement was late May; the Leno announcement came like a week or so later. Dave came on in like June or July.

It’d be nice if Dave wore outfits like that again!

This is very interesting in light of recent events especially. I forgot how much NBC can screw things up.Letterman got the best he deserves and I hope he stays for a long time.

it’s all in his delivery. the average joke he tells in a monologue isn’t that good at all but it’s funny because of how he tells it, or how he makes fun of it. he tells really good stories too

I will over the fact that you said you aren’t a Coco fan, but THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ppl DON’T understand why Conan said no. It pisses me off when they’re like, “Why coudn’t he just move it half and hour later?”
Conan CARES about the legacy and stood up for what he believed him and that makes him extremely strong because as a true fan, I KNOW how much he wanted the job.

Oh, I’ve been looking up countless videos of Carson on here and bought a large boxset of his best times on The Tonight Show. It’s not much, but I plan to learn as much about him as possible. If only there were a station that aired reruns of his old shows. I’d watch it all the time.

@bwahahachick, you missed the best. Turn off the TV and watch clips here or get the DVD’s. I guarantee you that you’ll laugh more. But I am grateful I was able to end many days with Carson and a good laugh. I miss it.

How utterly ironic. I posted before as I just started watching. When Letterman said how it would be different and how angry he would be if they gave him the show and took it back. WOW talk about profetic!!!
What a shame Carson didn’t get his wish and Letterman was the next host. I think The Tonight Show would have been a million times better w/him than either Leno or Conan.
Wonder the date of this? Seems Letterman is on air FAR longer then he planned then

While I’m not a huge fan of Conan’s (or Leno for that matter), I feel it was ONLY Conan who cared about the legacy of The Tonight Show and saved it. I give him huge props for that.
As for me, I’d rather tune in to Carson reruns (SERIOUSLY) than anyone on late night today. No one can hold a candle to him.

@danazawa – then you just don’t get the comedy. It doesn’t mean it’s unfunny just because you don’t like it. A lot of british comedy is out there so go sit down. :]

I wonder if anyone will ask him Carson’s questions about 30 years… or he’ll be asking someone else.
He started Late Night back in 1982… 28 years on late night talk shows.

@Danazawa I don’t think a lot of people find him funny, I think a lot of the people who watch are tuning in for the interviews. He is able to get a lot of great names on his show but his daily monologues and segments are bad.

Johnny Carson is absolutely fantastic, but as a British person I must ask the question of my American cousins: WHY do you find David Letterman funny??????? he is unfunny to the point of psychosis.

its no secret carson preferred david take over the show…in fact, privately, he vowed to never guest on a leno hosted tonight show…and he was angry that nbc execs never once asked him who he would consider the appropriate heir to the throne…but…in my opinion…both jay and dave have had their shots…conan and others…and influence arguments aside…there just hasn’t been anyone who captured late-nights the way carson did…not even close…

Conan should have done a bit about that. Like ‘yay I got the show’, then “28 weeks later” comes on screen, and you see rage-filled NBC executives chasing him down and eating him and Andy.

Exactly, Jack Benny was a HUGE influnce on Johnny.

While Johnny is undeniably the king, those three – and many others – do not merely imitate him. Johnny has set the template for late night, but even he had his influences. Comedy builds upon itself.

Actually they said that 28 weeks later.
