In Europe it is known as the Opel Insignia, but for the North American market General Motors decided to revive a name first used back in 1973: Regal. Sales of the new Buick Regal sport sedan will begin in the second quarter of 2010, and its main competitors will be the Japanese Acura TSX and Swedish Volvo S60.

The 2011 Regal will be offered only in the CXL trim (additional ones will be added for the 2012 model year). The Regal CXL will be offered standard with a 2.4 Liter Ecotec direct injected four cylinder engine that delivers a maximum output of 182 HP, however a 2.0 Liter direct gasoline injected turbocharged Ecotec cranking out 220 HP will be offered as an option. Both engines will come mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with driver-shift control.

There is nothing much to say about the new Regal’s design, anyone can recognize the Insignia underneath the Buick badge. With its aggressive styling and tailored applications of Buick’s signature design cues, such as the waterfall grill, select use of chrome trim and superior fit and finish of the exterior panels. While the interior consists of all the latest technologies to keep it up to date in the 21st century: navigation, Harmon Kardon sound system, internal flash drive (1GB), hard drive with 10GB for music and USB port.

Updated 01/21/10: Buick announced today prices for the 2010 Regal. Prices start at $26,995 for the premium CXL model and at $29,495 for the CXL turbo model (including a $750 destination charge). Regal production for sale in the U.S. and Canada begins late Q1 2010 in Russelsheim, Germany, with vehicles expected to start arriving at dealerships in Q2 2010.

After the 7-Series ActiveHybrid and X6 ActiveHybrid, the Bavarian company will also bring the 5 Series ActiveHybrid. The concept will make its world debut next week at the Geneva Motor Show.

The concept’s drive system combines a 300 hp straight-six gasoline engine (by comparison, both 7-Series and X6 Active Hybrid are using a V8 engine) with TwinPower Turbo technology, eight-speed automatic transmission, and electric drive that develops a total of 40 KW. In city driving the concept allows an all-electric, zero-emission motoring.

The concept features a new monitoring navigation route system that allows the concept to adjust its operating strategy not just to current, but also to upcoming driving conditions. To analyze driving conditions up front, the system uses data provided by engine and chassis management as well as the sensors in the driver assistance systems on board the car.

Cadillac is getting serious about the European market, and that’s evident with the new 2010 CTS Sport Wagon. While wagons have not always been the preference for North American customers, the extra space finds favor with European customers. The wagon was a natural evolution for Cadillac considering the CTS was designed to compete with sedans from Germany such as the Audi A4 and the BMW 3-Series. The more aggressive lines suggest that the CTS Sport Wagon is going after A4 Avant customers.

The base engine in North America will be the 3.6-liter 263 horsepower V-6. Optional will be a the 3.6-liter with added direct injection, which increases output to 304 horsepower. There is also a 2.9-liter turbo-diesel V-6 engine option making 250 horsepower for the European and Asian markets. The gas engine V-6 Sport Wagon’s fuel economy is expected to be similar to the peak rating of the sedan’s 26 mpg highway rating. All will be available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission as well as all-wheel drive.
