2022 Audi A8 New design and extra technology

Luxury, elegance, status, and prestige. If we think of a car that can be described with these four words, the model that comes to mind is undoubtedly the Audi A8, a vehicle that has become a benchmark in the luxury saloon segment since 1994. Audi introduced the fourth generation of its flagship in 2017, taking its design, power, and equipment to a higher level and making the A8 the progressive face of the brand to this day. However, on October 28 we had the pleasure of seeing the new Audi A8 for the first time, with a more aerodynamic design, a new front, next-generation technologies, and new front and rear lights, among other elements, which together create a new user-oriented experience and safe mobility.

The new Audi A8 has a more representative and athletic exterior design, especially at the front, as the base of the Singleframe grille is now wider and the side air intakes are more vertical. From a side view, the rooftop is flat and the elongated body lines accentuate its length, while the wide wheel arches hint at the standard Quattro traction system.

All these design changes minimally modify the dimensions of the A8, which now has a length of 5.19 meters, a width of 1.95 meters, a height of 1.47 meters, and a wheelbase of 3 meters. It should be noted that the S8, the sportiest model, is approximately one centimeter longer.

To close the section on exterior design, it should be noted that Audi also offers a chrome exterior package and, for the first time in the A8, the new S line exterior package, which incorporates a distinctive blade in the area of the side air intakes, very similar to that of the S8, to enhance the front. As for the colors available for the new A8, Audi offers a total of eleven possibilities: the new District Green Metallic, Firmament Blue, Manhattan Gray, Ultra Blue, and the new matte colors Daytona Gray, Florette Silver, District Green, Terra Gray, and Glacier White. However, with the Audi Exclusive program, you can choose any color for the new Audi A8.

MATRIX LED HEADLIGHTS AND OLED TAILLIGHTS

The Digital Matrix LED headlamps in the new Audi A8 employ DMD (digital micromirror device) technology, each containing some 1.3 million micromirrors, allowing the light beam to be adjusted with the utmost precision. The headlights have a new very practical function for driving on the road, the lane lights. As its name suggests, this function emits a kind of carpet of light that illuminates the entire lane with intensity. Another function, the orientation function, is very useful to circulate safely in areas where there are construction sites, as it helps the driver to stay intuitively in his lane.

On the other hand, the new A8 is equipped as standard with OLED digital taillights, which stand out for having a proximity indication function. That is, if another car approaches from behind within two meters of the A8, all OLED segments are activated to alert the approaching driver.

SPACIOUS, ELEGANT, AND TECHNOLOGICAL INTERIOR

Inside, the new A8 offers a spacious, elegant, comfortable cabin with the highest quality details. The wide range of seats offered by the German firm is very striking, especially in the rear seats, where numerous adjustment options are available and a footrest located on the passenger backrest that includes the heating and massage function.

The seats are upholstered as standard in Valetta leather, although they are optionally available in Valcona leather and the new Cognac Brown color. As an option, the customer can also choose to upholster the door panels, the pillar trim, and the roof with the sustainable microfiber material Dinamica.

However, during the presentation of the new Audi A8, we were very struck by the two new 10.1-inch displays on the backs of the front seats. It seems to us a good solution to increase the comfort of passengers traveling in the rear seats. In addition, the central armrest at the rear allows many comfort and infotainment functions of the vehicle to be controlled via an OLED touch screen the size of a smartphone.

The new A8 is equipped with the MMI touch response operating system, which is based on two 25.6 and 21.8-centimeter displays, and on the voice control system with voice recognition. The Audi Virtual Cockpit digital instrumentation optionally offers the head-up display, which shows the most important information directly in the driver’s line of sight. In addition, the new A8 features MMI Navigation plus, which is based on the third generation of the Modular Infotainment Platform (MIB 3).

The new A8 has approximately 40 driver assistance systems as standard, including the Audi pre-sense basic and Audi pre-sense front safety systems. All security options are organized in three different packages “Park”, “City” and “Tour”. The “Park” package stands out for incorporating the remote parking assistant plus; the “City” package incorporates the intersection assistant, the lane-keeping assistant, the rear cross-traffic assistant, the exit assistant, and the Audi pre sense 360º security system; Finally, the “Tour” package is the most complete and, in addition to incorporating many systems, it has an adaptive cruise.

The V6 3.0 TDI engine is incorporated into the Audi A8 50 TDI quattro and the A8 L 50 TDI quattro. This diesel engine develops 210 kW (286 hp) of power, 600 Nm of torque, accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km / h.

For its part, the V6 3.0 TFSI engine powers the Audi A8 55 TFSI quattro and the A8 L 55 TFSI quattro. This engine develops a power of 250 kW (340 hp) and 500 Nm of torque, although in the Chinese market there is a variant with 210 kW (286 hp).

Audi offers other versions that, for now, will not be available in the Spanish market: the V8 4.0 TFSI with 339 kW (460 hp) of power and 660 Nm of torque. This engine, which can be equipped with the A8 60 TFSI Quattro and A8 L 60 TFSI Quattro, is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.4 seconds.

Finally, Audi offers two plug-in hybrid variants: the Audi A8 60 TFSIe Quattro and the A8 L 60 TFSIe Quattro. Both combine the 3.0 TFSI motor with an electric motor, while the lithium-ion battery increases its capacity to 14.4 kWh, considerably more than in the previous model. With 340 kW (462 hp) of power and 700 Nm of torque, the A8 60 TFSIe Quattro accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.9 seconds.

NEW AUDI S8

The Audi S8 TFSI Quattro, the sportiest model in the range, is equipped with a V8 Biturbo engine with 420 kW (571 hp) of power and 800 Nm of maximum torque that allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds. The most powerful model in the A8 family offers predictive active suspension, sport differential, and dynamic all-wheel steering as standard. Note that the new S8 is offered exclusively with a long wheelbase in the markets of China, the United States, Canada, and South Korea. This increased length and height of the vehicle offers greater comfort for passengers thanks to the additional space generated for the head and legs.
