Design

The center of gravity of the Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster should be obvious at first sight alone: it is sporty, which is largely due to its long snout, among other things. The overhangs, which are also quite short, give the car its typical and unmistakable roadster proportions.

The narrow, pointed LED headlights give the face of the SL an almost aggressive attitude. This upscale sporting spirit is underlined by the pull-down radiator grille with its typical AMG design. Overall, the SL Roadster gives a picture that is decorated with curves as well as edges, which in no way appears inharmonious – on the contrary, the mixture of elegant and pointed shapes makes the speedster appear extremely dynamic.

At the rear, you can undoubtedly see the air inlets behind the wheel arches. These not only have an optical function, but they also serve the aerodynamics of the already streamlined car. Speaking of wind: the Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster is equipped with an electric folding fabric roof so that it can blow around your head.

Roof

The car was formerly equipped with a metal roof, but Mercedes decided to use a fabric roof in favor of a lower weight and an improved center of gravity. This measure has another plus point because the roof can be retracted or extended in a brisk 15 seconds. In addition, it takes up less space when folded, so that the trunk is not filled with the roofing material.

Modern soft tops are soundproofed in several layers, so you can be sure that the ride with the roof closed will be very relaxing. Various air baffles should reduce the air turbulence when you fold down the roof – which should be possible up to a speed of 60 km / h.

Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster: interior

2022 Mercedes SL interior

The interior of the new SL Roadster offers a mix of sporty and luxurious design features, dominated by an 11.9-inch multimedia touchscreen. This can be tilted electronically to minimize glare. There is also a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster that is integrated into a high-tech visor – also a measure against light reflections.

The second-generation MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system offers functions similar to that of the S-Class sedan but is more performance-oriented. There is also an optional 3D head-up display that fits seamlessly into the system. Mercedes calls the combination of digital layout and analog interior geometry “hyper-analog cockpit”.

The interior is designed in a 2 + 2 design and offers two small rear seats for children or luggage. This differs from the AMG GT and offers an additional degree of practicality, similar to the layout in the Porsche 911 Cabriolet. The seats, which are sculpturally designed and are standard AMG sports seats, are a highlight. The Airscarf, an air scarf, is also standard – warm air is blown out of the air outlets in the headrests and wraps around the neck like a scarf.

Engines

For the market launch of the new Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster, Mercedes would like to offer its powerful 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine in two output levels. The engine is of course more than just lively, even monstrous, and thanks to the so-called twin-scroll technology, it should enable a response that reacts to even more spontaneous maneuvers.

Both the “weaker” unit, which is anything but weak with 476 PS and 700 Nm maximum torque, and the top model SL63 4Matic + with 585 PS and 800 Nm torque is equipped with the very good Mercedes all-wheel drive. The lowered speedster is not suitable for off-road use, but it demonstrates significantly better braking and acceleration behavior.

3.6 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h can be described as nothing less than a peak value. The 3.9 seconds that the SL55 4Matic + needs in comparison to this are almost snail-like. Joking aside, the engines of the SL Roadster testify to the highest level of engineering skill and are a treat for absolute speed fans. In any case, the engine is combined with a nine-speed automatic transmission, which excels due to its particularly short shift times.

Those who opt for the top model will get a top speed of 315 km / h, with the SL 55 a whopping 295 km / h is still possible. At a later date, the SL will also be available as an AMG E Performance, then a performance hybrid drive will make the SL more efficient.

In addition, the new roadster comes with six different driving modes: “Slippery”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport +”, “Individual” and “RACE”. Depending on your taste, the SL Roadster can be adjusted to be more comfortable or brutally sporty.

2022 Mercedes SL: Prices and the start of sales

The market launch of the SL is likely to take place in March 2022. As for the price, you will have to dig deep into your pockets. It is available for around 118,000 euros. If you want the top version SL63, you can add a few thousand euros.
