Must the ranks of compact athletes fear a new edition of the Opel Astra OPC 2022? The reactivation of the high-horsepower Rüsselsheimer is quite realistic – possibly also as a GSi. It’s too early for a price, though.
Fans of the Opel Astra have been watching since 2018 OPC already in the tube: With the discontinuation of the 280 hp three-door model, the Rüsselsheim-based company said goodbye to the compact sports guild – even an Astra GSi was not reissued.
Astra-Generation K has been relying exclusively on a maximum of 145 hp three-cylinder since 2019. From 2021 you can finally dream of more power again: The recently introduced Astra L uses the EMP-2 platform of the PSA Group, which allows additional electrical power. The future plug-in hybrid models impressively show what this will look like. Up to 225 hp on the front axle has already been announced. With an additional electric motor on the rear axle, the Astra OPC would even become a 300 hp four-wheel drive, similar to the Grandland 4Hybrid. And what accelerates an almost 1.9-ton SUV to 100 km / h in 6.1 seconds, should also work very well in a lighter and more streamlined compact car.
That, even more, is possible on the platform is shown by the Peugeot 508 PSE, which with 360 HP marks the current end of the EMP-2 flagpole. Let’s go back specifically to the potential technology of the Opel Astra OPC (2022) or Astra GSi: The basis is a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder that produces 180 hp and, in itself, exudes little emotion. The spice comes from the electric motors, which are located directly on the respective axle and increase the system performance.
Even if PSA relies on an eight-speed automatic in the hybrid models: paddle shifters on the steering wheel also pick up ambitious drivers. The Astra with its Vizor grill is already a real eye-catcher. Combined with a larger air inlet, spoiler mechanism, and larger rims, it appears very coherent in front of the imaginary eye. Hopefully, Opel will recognize the signs of the times and revive one of the legendary abbreviations with the Opel Astra OPC or GSi from 2022. At what price? Unfortunately, it is still too early to answer this question.
