2023 Volkswagen Amarok Revealed With New Tech

The new edition of the Volkswagen Amarok 2023 was created in cooperation with Ford and shares the engines with the Ranger. A hybrid is not yet in sight for the pick-up and the price is also still unclear. That is new!

Launched in 2010 and since then more than 830,000 have been sold worldwide, the second generation of the Volkswagen Amarok will be launched in 2022 at an estimated price of around 36,000 euros – also in Europe, which is by no means a matter of course. Pick-ups like the Amarok are successful worldwide, but not on the old continent.

That is why the new edition is being created within the Volkswagen-Ford cooperation on the Ranger platform, also from 2022. The Ford is one of the world’s best-selling pick-ups and can therefore be considered a promising basis. So that the relationship does not catch the eye too much, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has used its designer box of tricks for both the exterior and the interior and has adapted numerous components as far as possible.

Horizontal and straight lines characterize the Volkswagen Amarok 2023, which is available with a single or double cab. The massive radiator grille ends in an x-shaped front apron, depending on the equipment line, and is flanked by LED headlights (with matrix technology in the Panamericana and Aventura equipment lines) with two daytime running light strips.

Up to 21-inch light-alloy wheels fill the angular wheel arches – something that VW Commercial Vehicles is particularly proud of. A large Amarok logo is emblazoned on the loading flap at the rear. The C-shaped rear lights are designed in LED technology in the highest equipment variants. Details such as the rear-view mirrors or the doors ultimately cannot deny the Ranger’s origin.

A similar game in the interior of the Volkswagen Amaro 2023, is supposed to stand out from the platform dispenser with a massively designed center console and its steering wheel. The extremely dominant 10.0 or 12.0-inch screen of the infotainment system, depending on the equipment, reveals the basis. The Amarok should be intuitive to use thanks to the combination of touchscreen, buttons, and rotary pushbuttons. Android Auto (Google) and CarPlay (Apple) for integrating the smartphone interface are standard, as are mobile Volkswagen online services and two USB ports. The Harman Kardon sound system is optional.

Up to 20 storage compartments, for example for 1.5-liter bottles, mobile phones, tablets, or work folders, are intended to make everyday life in the Amarok, which is mostly used as a workhorse, as pleasant as possible. In this context, more than 20 new assistance systems should also be mentioned, including cruise control with spacer, traffic sign recognition, and lane departure warning. Whether these are part of the standard scope depends on the selected equipment line: The Volkswagen Amarok 2023 is available in the basic version as Amarok, in the higher versions as Life, Style, Panamericana, and Aventura.

Increased Off-road Skills

With a length of 5350 millimeters, the Volkswagen Amarok 2023 has grown by a whopping 96 millimeters with the generation change. With dimensions of 2305 x 1224 millimeters, the loading area of the single cab offers space for two Euro pallets, while that of the crew cab is 1544 x 1224. Under the electrically operated cover, which can be operated from the interior or with the vehicle key, up to 1.16 instead of the previous 1.0 tons can be loaded.

The specified roof load of 350 kilograms is suitable for roof tents, and depending on the engine, there is also a trailer load of up to 3.5 tons. The 3270 mm wheelbase, which has been extended by as much as 173 millimeters, should not only benefit the feeling of space in the second row of seats but also increase off-road capability thanks to shorter overhangs and better approach angles (29 degrees at the front, 21 degrees at the rear). The wading depth increases by 300 to 800 millimeters. If that’s not enough, you can get a snorkel from the original range of accessories.

All diesel has an 80-liter fuel tank and a 19.3-liter instead of the previous 6.3-liter AdBlue tank. An only petrol engine is a 2.3-liter unit with four cylinders and 302 hp (222 kW).

All engines from 209 hp (154 kW) come standard with a ten-speed automatic transmission, which is available as an option for the 204 hp variant. Otherwise, either a six-speed automatic or a five- or six-speed manual transmission is used. The Volkswagen Amarok will come onto the market at the end of 2022. For the USA, on the other hand, Volkswagen is planning to reactivate a well-known brand: Under the “Scout” label, an electric full-size pick-up is to be compared to models such as the Ford F-150 Lightning or enter the Chevrolet Silverado EV.
