Exterior design and specifications
If you still have the concept vehicle presented in 2019 in mind, you will immediately see that Alfa Romeo has stuck to it very closely. Hardly any changes have been made to the production model. According to the manufacturer, the Tonale is aimed at young, urban, and dynamic customers. With its compact dimensions of 4.53 meters long, 1.84 meters wide, and 1.60 meters high, the crossover is well suited for the city.
As far as looks go, Alfa Romeo fans are sure to recognize some stylistic cues that can be found on almost all of the manufacturer’s models. The “GT-Line”, for example, runs from the rear to the headlights and is intended to remind of the Giulia GT forms. The full and elegant volume that alternates with the GT lines is inspired by the 8C Competizione.
The front is the eye-catcher of the vehicle. The typical triangular grille, which bears the Alfa Romeo logo in the middle at the top, is an individual feature of the brand. New 3+3 headlights with adaptive LED matrix lights are the modern element and form a dynamic front line for the vehicle.
If you look at the taillights, you can see the same design cues as the headlights. The sine wave wraps around the stern creating a pretty light signature.
Also eye-catching is the wraparound rear window, which again is reminiscent of the 8C Competizione, as are the alloy wheels, which are reminiscent of an old telephone dial. Alfa Romeo has already succeeded in mixing tradition and modernity in design.
Engines and plug-in hybrid
With the Tonale, Alfa Romeo is moving towards electrification with the first model – better late than never. However, the Tonale is not a pure electric car, it is designed as a diesel, mild or plug-in hybrid with the latest hybrid technology. There will be two engines for the Tonale. First to debut will be the mild-hybrid model with 160 hp, a 48-volt VGT electric motor, and a 1.5-liter petrol engine. At launch, this engine will also be available in a smaller 130 hp version. Both are connected to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The top version of the Tonale is then designed as a plug-in hybrid. This delivers 275 hp and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds. The purely electric range in city operation is 80 kilometers. Combined, the Tonale still has a range of 60 kilometers with the electric motor.
Alfa Romeo also has something ready for fans of classic drives, namely a diesel. This 1.6-liter diesel engine delivers 130 hp and 320 Nm of torque. A 6-speed dual-clutch transmission is installed and only front-wheel drive is possible here.
Alfa Romeo Tonale interior
Without a doubt, the interior is sporty, almost racing – and that is exactly the intention of Alfa. One should remember the successful racing history of the manufacturer.
The driver is the focus, but comfort is not neglected. Everything is sporty and high-tech. Aluminum elements alternate with soft leather and Alcantara and create warmth and comfort, but also coolness and dynamism. The instrument panel is telescopic and the steering wheel looks compact and sporty. There are also aluminum shift paddles.
In addition to high-quality equipment, you can also look forward to state-of-the-art technologies in the tonal range. One of the most important innovations is the integrated function of Amazon Alexa. You should always feel at home and be able to do everything more easily and conveniently. The “Secure Delivery Service” function allows choosing the Tonale as a place for the delivery of packages. The courier is then allowed to unlock the door and place the package in the car.
A new infotainment system is also on board. It consists of two large displays that are 22.5 inches in total. The Android system is customizable and offers 4G connectivity with over-the-air updates. The 12.3-inch telescopic display can be seen in the middle. All vehicle data and settings are displayed here.
The 10.25-inch infotainment screen is integrated into the dashboard. The system can be easily and intuitively adapted to individual needs using drag-and-drop. A separate homepage can be created for each user, which displays every function of the vehicle as an app. It is up to you whether the touchscreen or the rotary knob is used for operation.
