The tests for the third-generation BMW X1 are in full swing and now a prototype has come to us on a test drive in front of the camera. The market launch will probably not be until 2022, so this is still an early test vehicle. We have the pictures and all the previous information about the new X1 for you.
The BMW X1 is one of the most popular compact SUVs on the market and if BMW has its way, it should stay that way in the future. Therefore, the new model is already being worked on and the first tests are being carried out on public roads, as the pictures show.
It will be a while before the new X1 model is launched on the market. But you can already request the latest BMW X1 offers and save an average of 8,700 euros when buying a new X1.
Prices
The new X1 will come onto the market at the end of 2021 at the earliest, but probably not until spring 2022, because the current model did not receive a facelift until the end of 2019. It is therefore still difficult to say what prices BMW will call for prices. The current model has a base price of just under 32,300 euros. We estimate that the new model will be a bit more expensive and could imagine a starting price of 35,000 euros.
Engines and driving behavior
In spring 2020 the current X1 model got a plug-in hybrid version, the X3 was even fully electrified as the iX3. The same will happen with the third-generation X1, which BMW has already confirmed. So in addition to an X1 with a conventional drive, we can also look forward to a fully electric compact SUV from Munich, which will very likely be named iX1. The plug-in hybrid will also continue to be available in the new model.
The X1 will be available with front-wheel drive, more powerful versions will probably also be available with all-wheel drive. The prototype that we got in front of the camera, however, is a combustion model, which can be seen from the exhaust pipes.
Most likely, three- and four-cylinder engines will also be installed in the new X1. More details about the engines are currently not known.
BMW X1 2022 Exterior design

The X1 doesn’t show much yet, it is still heavily glued because the new model is just at the beginning of the test phase. Accordingly, we assume that many components are still placed as placeholders that we will not see in the production model. An example would be the taillights. We certainly do not expect such angular and misshapen taillights on the new X1, because they will rely on a much slimmer design, similar to the X5 – possibly.
The radiator grille appears quite wide, the design is narrow and high, just like it has now done with the new 4 Series. It is not yet possible to say which radiator grille there will be. But it will be quite big if you look at the current trend at BMW.

The shapes are skilfully hidden on the side, but what can be seen are the fold-up door handles, which are also expected for the inext models and the new 2 Series Active Tourer.
BMW X1 2022 Interior
How things will go inside remains to be seen. We appreciate that you will concentrate on the essentials and forego unnecessary frills. Buttons are unlikely to be found anymore and overall, high-quality materials, the latest safety equipment, and a touchscreen infotainment system can be expected.
