Cupra launches the most powerful and radical version of the Formentor, this VZ5 with 390 horses, all-wheel drive and maximum sportiness, of which only 7,000 units will be manufactured. A great way to celebrate the brand’s third anniversary.
Perhaps the title is a bit exaggerated: ‘he does not go over Cupra’. Because the Spanish brand launched just three years ago as a sporty and premium ‘arm’ of Seat, has managed in this short space of time to make an image among the most dynamic customers. But not only that; It also launched its first 100% Cupra model and placed it among the seven finalists for Car of the Year in Europe 2021.
For this reason, saying that it is no more, may not be correct. Because if in just three years he has achieved all this … who knows how far he can go and what new surprises and models he prepares for us.
For now, we can say that Cupra is fulfilling all the steps that Seat drew in the launch strategy of the brand. The Spanish firm sought to give the sportier models a different hallmark, in which the sporty character and premium style will be combined to offer a different alternative to those buyers looking to distinguish themselves. First, it was with models ‘inherited’ from Seat such as the Ateca or the Leon.
But with the arrival of Formentor, both characteristics began to the square. The first Cupra developed one hundred percent since its inception has meant a turning point for the image and development of Cupra. And now with this new VZ5, which takes sporting character to its maximum expression, it can be said that the Spanish brand fulfills point by point what it promised in its ‘founding act’.
Cupra Formentor VZ5 Engine
This VZ5 is the maximum, in terms of power and sportiness, created by the Spanish brand. Never a model born from Seat has reached this level of power. For this, it relies on the technology available from the Volkswagen Group. Thus, the 2.5 five-cylinder engine is a classic in Audi, which uses it in the RS4, for example-, With it, the new Cupra Formentor VZ5 develops 390 horsepower -ten less than in the sports car with the rings-, with a maximum torque of 48.9 kg and performance of another level, as it is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.2 seconds or reaching 250 km / h as maximum speed.
Not only do they want to come up with dizzying performance figures; They also want to make it a reference and, in a way, a kind of collector’s item, since only 7,000 units are going to be manufactured.
For this reason, specific work has been done to highlight it from the rest of the Formentor range models. A range that, as we have seen in the Formentor 1.5 TSI 150, already stands out for its sporty style. But here that multiplies. The exterior design is touched up here with elements such as a new hood with sculpted lines, new air intakes, a new specific bumper, or the grille frame in Sports Matt Black color. If we look at the side view we see new more prominent wheel arches to house 20-inch wheels under which a six-piston brake system with calipers of up to 370 mm is integrated. in copper color signed by Akebono. And at the rear, we find a new carbon fiber diffuser and a quadruple exhaust outlet with copper-colored pipes. There is also an exclusive color, this Taiga Gray that appears in the photos.
Inside there is a successful mix of sportiness and luxury. Reinforce the sporty style with copper accents and dark brushed aluminum. And with CUPBucket sports seats that can be upholstered in Petrol Blue or black leather. the Taiga Gray color also has a specific finish, in which it offers brown Nappa leather seats, perforated and with copper details. The large 12-inch screen is standard on the dashboard and the instrument panel features the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit.
Adaptive chassis, five driving modes, Launch Control …
But beyond the style, what is going to attract customers to this Cupra Formentor VZ5 is what we find under the hood, the mechanical part. Because the combination of the 2.5 TSI engine with direct injection and turbo -touched by Cupra in its cooling system-, with the 7-speed DSG transmission, the 4Drive all-wheel drive, or the adaptive chassis control with 15 levels of damping adjustment, they result in a sports car with all the laws.
To keep up with the demanding customer who will look at this Formentor, it finishes off its characteristics with five driving modes (Comfort, Sport, Individual, Offroad, and CUPRA) -with a new Drift mode for controlled oversteer- that are selected on the steering wheel, Launch Control system to optimize acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h, progressive steering system …
All this waste of dynamism appears controlled by a safety team and driving aids that have the most advanced that is available in the sector. It offers elements such as Adaptive and Predictive Cruise Assist (ACC), Travel Assist, Exit, and Lateral Assist, and Emergency Assist. Also, considering that the driver must be one hundred percent focused on driving, the connectivity solutions are of the highest order thanks to the Wireless Full Link system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A system that is managed with voice recognition, which allows you not to take your eyes off the road for a second.
Only three years have been necessary for the Spanish brand has created this authentic ‘does not go’, a model that will reach the market in the last quarter of this year and, incidentally, announces new challenges … sure are already preparing something to improve it.
