MG wants to return to its English origins by presenting a classic rear-wheel drive roadster. Its launch in China is immediate, as confirmed by its public reports. All Chinese manufacturers must go through a series of bureaucratic procedures before releasing the cars on the road. One of those steps is to provide all the necessary technical information to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. That is where the first definitive images of the Cyberster come from. Until now it had only been made known through sketches and 3D recreations, in addition to the occasional spy photo that already anticipated a most attractive design. The format cannot be more classic.
With quite contained measurements ( 4.53 meters long, 1.91 meters wide, and just 1.33 meters high), the Cyberster is positioned as a practically unique model of its kind. To this day, at least in Europe, there is no electric sports car with a soft top. The design will be its great attraction with a very sharp nose that, in a way, is quite reminiscent of the BMW Z4. A steeply-raked windshield transfers the passenger compartment to the center of the vehicle, so an ideal mass distribution is expected. The rear part stands out for its headlights and also for a lower diffuser with various aerodynamic channels.
At the moment, the only unknown is the one related to the interior. Neither the Ministry nor MG has revealed specific details of the cabin, although a minimalist space is expected where digitization wins all, or almost all, prominence. We will not have to wait long to find out for sure because the official launch is scheduled for the opening day of the Shanghai Motor Show, scheduled for next April 18. Soon after, the MG Cyberster will begin its commercialization phase in China. It is expected that it will head to Europe next year, although nothing is confirmed at the moment.
Under that attractive bodywork is a specific platform adapted for the high performance of the electric sports car. MG has announced three different mechanical versions: two with a single engine and one with a dual engine. Thanks to permanent magnet synchronous motors, the access versions with a single motor on the rear axle will develop powers of 310 and 335 horsepower. Regarding the most powerful version of the house, the final power has not been published, but it has been detailed that the front block will offer 201 horsepower while the rear engine will reach 335 horsepower. It will be the fastest unit of all with a top speed of 200 km/h.
Regarding the battery, no technical data is known, although it is known that it will be the latest generation lithium-ion battery developed jointly between SAIC and CATL. During its stage as a concept vehicle, the MG Cyberster always announced a range close to 800 kilometers, although that data is yet to be confirmed. Given the high power, it will be difficult for it to reach that figure, although the positive impact of aerodynamics must also be taken into account, as well as the compact size of a car that does not seem to be excessively heavy.
