Ford Ranger will have a Lightning electric version

The pick-up segment is one of the most important, if not the most important, in the US market. For decades, the sales ranking in that country has been firmly led by the Ford F-150 , always followed by the Chevrolet Silverado and RAM 1,500, manufactured respectively by General Motors and the Stellantis group.

How could it be otherwise, this category is being electrified in parallel to the rest of the industry. Despite the fact that the pick-up sector may seem relatively conservative, against all odds it seems that it will be one of the fastest to be electrified, as evidenced by the overwhelming success of the Tesla Cybertruck, which accumulates more than 1.3 million reservations .

Ford itself has been forced to double planned production of the F-150 Lightning, the electric version of its best-selling truck. However, this is not the only pick-up from the manufacturer of the blue oval, because below the F-150 are the Maverick and Ranger , and above the Super Duty (F-250, F-350, F-450). ). Will these three models also receive electric versions?

Apparently, the two smaller ones do, since the company has just registered the trade names Maverick Lightning and Ranger Lightning in Europe , something especially curious if we take into account that only the Ranger is sold in our market. However, a few different names have been registered in the United States.

Ford Ranger

The surname Thunder could identify Ford’s PHEV pick-ups

In its home market, the electric versions of the Maverick and Ranger will apparently be given the Thunder surname. However, the fact that Ford has also registered the name F-150 Thunder despite the existence of the F-150 Lightning makes us think that the name Thunder will actually identify plug-in hybrid models .

The arrival of an electric version of the Ranger does not catch anyone by surprise, as it is confirmed that its twin sister, the Volkswagen Amarok, will receive a variant of this type in the medium term. Although the Ranger will also be available as a plug-in hybrid, this option will not exist in the Volkswagen model.
