This large electric SUV could serve as the company’s flagship with seven seats, alongside the Kia Sorento, or even replace it.
Kia EV9 Design
The EV9 is very angular, distinctive, and confident. A bit rough, in fact, but that’s intentional because the EV9 wants to show that it is ready for adventure at any time. It should serve as a recreational vehicle and thus be suitable for a large family in everyday life. What you can also say about the design is that it is based on the new design philosophy of the manufacturer “Bold for Nature”.
The element of water in particular served as inspiration for the designers. The flooring is made from recycled fishing nets, and the seat covers are made from recycled plastic bottles and wool fibers. In addition, the interior is made of vegan leather – Kia would like to reduce animal leather in all vehicles step by step.
So you were inspired by nature, which you can see from some elements. For example, there is the optically low center of gravity and the sharp-cut fenders that are inspired by the shape of crystals. They are positioned high, and the low center of gravity in the side view makes them stand out even more. This gives the EV9 a particularly powerful appearance.
But the EV9 also has a softer side – the interior. You can find more information about this below. But what still needs to be said about the optics: the powerful presence and the stable, almost rock-like geometry make the EV9 appear strong and irrefutable.
Its dimensions also show that it is a large vehicle, as it will be 4.93 meters long, 2.06 meters wide, and 1.79 meters high. The wheelbase is a whopping 3.10 meters and there will be a third row of seats, making the EV9 a 7-seater.
What is also new is that the so-called tiger face is now shown digitally. As you can see the front is closed and the new grill contains a star cloud pattern. However, this light show can only be seen when the vehicle is started. Inspired by the pattern, the daytime running lights were also designed, which gives the study a recognition feature.
Where the engine ventilation can be found under the hood of other vehicles, Kia has installed a solar module in the EV9 to generate part of the energy used by the vehicle when you are not near a charging station. Here, too, you can find inspiration from nature.
The rear is also very noticeable, as is the very filigree triangular D-pillar. To have a contact point with nature again, a new and very large panoramic roof has been installed that gives passengers a great view upwards, but at the same time creates more well-being in the interior.
Kia EV9: interior and infotainment
Now we come to the inviting, soft side of the EV9 concept. The interior is designed for well-being, wellness, and mindfulness. Depending on how you want to travel, the interior can be converted and adapted. Once again adapted to nature, there is a style of a first-class lounge in which silence, movement, and natural design elements have been integrated.
The large, interactive 27-inch broadband display is used to control infotainment, air conditioning, and comfort, but also for connectivity with the outside world. The steering wheel can be folded in, thus increasing the usable space for the occupants: inside.
In the interior, you can choose between three modes that are tailored to different requirements. The “Active Mode” ensures an optimal driving experience while driving. The other two modes can only be used when the vehicle is stationary. The “pause mode” is intended for communication. In this mode, the interior is transformed into a lounge, and the passengers inside can interact with each other.
The seats can be adjusted so that one sits opposite, the second row of seats is folded in and serves as a table.
The third mode is the “Enjoy Mode” and is intended for interaction with the outside world. You open the tailgate and turn the seats in the third row over. This creates an atmosphere of a break room while you are still sitting in the vehicle but can communicate with the people outside.
Battery and motors
The modern electric drive of the EV9 should enable a range of up to 483 kilometers. More detailed information about the drive is not yet known.
Also, which battery should be used has not been communicated. A 77.4 kWh battery could be used, which will likely power four-wheel drive with two motors.
What has already been saying: The charging technology should be ultra-fast and the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in 20-30 minutes at a 350 kW station.
Kia EV9 Prices
The Kia EV9 concept was unveiled on November 17th at the LA Motorshow. It is not yet known when the series vehicle will be tested for the first time and when it will be launched. But we could imagine that it could be the end of 2022.
