After three years on the market, the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLS receives an update to face the second cycle of its commercial stage. The main changes are concentrated in the aesthetic plane, as well as in its technological equipment.
The third generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLS Coupé is updated while maintaining the main aesthetic features that it presented in 2018. This is a coupe-style saloon that competes in the market with rivals such as the Audi A7 Sportback and the Porsche Panamera. Recall that this model was in charge of presenting to the world the latest design language of the star’s signature, a philosophy that was later transferred to the A-Class.
At the design level, the renewed Mercedes-Benz CLS features a sharper and sportier front bumper, new alloy wheels, and a newly made grille. Thus, most of the changes are focused on the front of the car. Also, the manufacturer adds a new shade to the color palette called Spectral Blue Metallic. At the rear, the lower part of the bumper features a black painted diffuser that gives continuity to the sporty image that reflects the whole.
In addition to all the aforementioned changes, the AMG CLS 53 variant also receives the specific ‘Panamericana’ style grille with vertical chrome bars. As was the case with the previous model, you can choose an AMG Line exterior package that includes a series of even more radical differentiated elements typical of the DNA of the Mercedes sports division.
Inside, we find a new multifunction steering wheel covered in Nappa leather that includes haptic controls and a system capable of detecting if the driver has their hands on the rim. This technology is part of the new Driving Assistance Package that acts on the aid to braking, turning, and the safety distance. It is the same steering wheel that premiered the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The German manufacturer claims to have checked the fit of all the elements of the cabin. While the design of the dashboard is maintained, it is now possible to choose new options of two-tone leather upholstery and materials for the center console, which can be walnut brown or glossy gray.
The mechanical range of the Mercedes-Benz CLS consists of three diesel and two gasoline engines, in addition to the AMG sports variant. In the first case, we find the 194 hp CLS 220d versions, the CLS 300d 4MATIC with 265 hp, and the CLS 400d 4MATIC with 330 hp. Gasoline options include the 299 hp CLS 350 and the 367 hp CLS 450 4MATIC. All blocks are associated with a 48-volt light hybridization system and 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission.
The most interesting option is the Mercedes-AMG CLS 53, which is equipped with a six-cylinder in-line engine capable of developing 435 hp of power and a maximum torque of 520 Nm. This configuration also benefits from the use of the EQ Boost electrical system capable of briefly delivering up to 16 kW (22 hp) of power and an additional 250 Nm of torque. With all this, the CLS 53 is capable of completing from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km / h.
The first orders for the renewed CLS will be able to be formalized from next May. To see the first units roll on our roads, we will have to wait until June. To celebrate this update, Mercedes will launch a special edition called the Edition limited to 300 units.
