When the completely new Astra was presented, Opel announced the launch of the station wagon variant for 2022. The new Opel Astra Sports Tourer (ST) was unveiled this year. This means that the Rüsselsheim-based company is equal to the technology twin, the Peugeot 308. Because the French compact is already available as a five-door and station wagon. Except for the spacious rear end, there are no differences between the Hatchback Astra and the ST. The two vehicles are identical twins up to the B-pillar.

The new Astra Sport Tourer measures 4.64 x 1.86 x 1.48 meters (length x width x height). Although it is six centimeters shorter than its predecessor, it should offer more space. This is made possible by the new Stellantis platform. It helps the station wagon to have a wheelbase that has grown by seven centimeters to 2.73 meters (+ 5.7 cm compared to the new five-door model). The shorter outer length is due solely to the shorter front overhang, which also ensures more balanced proportions. In the rear, thanks to the longer wheelbase, there is enough space for even two tall people on the outer seats.
And the trunk is also impressive. The pure combustion engines offer 608 liters with the rear seat upLoad volume that increases to 1,634 liters with the seats folded down ( 40:20:40 ). This creates a completely flat loading area. This also applies to the two plug-in hybrid variants. However, their capacity is reduced to 548 to 1,574 liters due to the lithium-ion batteries built into the underbody. But even that should be enough for most everyday tasks. The loading sill is always pleasantly low at 60 centimeters.
Design
As mentioned at the beginning, there are no visual differences between the five-door and ST up to the B-pillar. The new face of the brand with the “Vizor” (black panel including logo and headlights) also looks very good on the station wagon. On the side view, the designers have tried to create a reasonably sporty line. Thanks to the sloping D-pillar, the slightly sloping, color-contrasting roof, and the extended roof edge spoiler, they managed to do that very well.
In contrast to the 308, the rear itself is strongly reminiscent of the five-door. Peugeot does without the black, continuous cover of the five-door in the station wagon. There is no such thing on the Astra anyway. This is why both models look very similar from behind. Central elements are the lightning logo in the middle.
Opel Astra Sports Tourer Interior
The cockpit is taken over 1: 1 from the five-door. This is why station wagon drivers can also enjoy the standard “Pure Panel”, which connects two 10-inch screens behind a glass unit. The digital instrument cluster offers different display styles, the touchscreen controls the multimedia systems, which are networked to different degrees depending on the equipment. Wireless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is always on board. There are direct selection buttons for frequently used settings such as air conditioning or the radio. The actual operation takes place via the touchscreen or the multifunction steering wheel.
Drive
In terms of drives, there are no differences between the five-door and station wagon either. The performance range of the Astra SportsTourer ranges from 110 hp to 130 hp for combustion engines (gasoline and diesel engines). The plug-in hybrids (PHEV) will only be available in the weaker version ( 133 kW / 180 PS ) at the start. The top part-time electrician with 165 kW (225 PS)System performance follows a little later.
If the battery of the PHEV models is fully charged externally before starting, they should be able to drive around 60 km purely electrically. This covers most commuter routes. Gasoline and diesel engines are equipped with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. For the more powerful variants, Opel offers an eight-speed automatic. The plug-in hybrids (but electrified) also have this. There is no all-wheel-drive variant.
Opel Astra Sports Tourer Price
The new Astra Sportstourer is expected to be on sale in Austria in 2022. The importer has not yet provided any further information. The prices are not yet known either. We expect a combination surcharge of around 1,500 euros. The five-door starts at 19,990 euros. The main competitors include the VW Golf Variant, the Ford Focus Tournament, the Skoda Octavia Combi, the Toyota Corolla ST, the Seat Leon Kombi, and the Kia Ceed and Hyundai i30 station wagons.
