Renault 5 Diamant: Classic look & New technology

The Renault 5 is celebrating. The nice French utility vehicle, sold continuously from 1972 to 1996, turns a whopping 50 years this 2022. To commemorate this important date, the diamond firm is carrying out a series of tributes, among which the recently presented 5 Diamant prototype stands out, made in collaboration with the designer Pierre Gonalons.

The R5 Diamant is a restomod based on the original 1970s model, although its small petrol engine has been replaced with an electric drivetrain; In addition, its body has been painted in a striking pink color. Composed of several layers, this painting with gold pigments has a glossy varnish that creates interesting effects depending on the light that falls on it.

Bumpers and side skirts for their part adopt a metallic tone, while details such as the headlights have been profoundly modified (they are no longer integrated into the front, and although they maintain their original shape, they are cut like a diamond). The rims, from an R5 Alpine, are white and have sun-shaped trims.

The selection of interior materials is also unique, as the pretzel steering wheel is made of marble on carbon, while the dials used in the gear lever and door handles are made of brass and stainless steel. As a concession to modernity, the dashboard now has a specific hole for the user to place their smartphone.

“Renault’s invitation to reinvent the legendary Renault 5 on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary is an honor for me. The brand has given me carte blanche to design the car of my dreams. In my opinion, Renault 5 embodies a pop, optimistic, and contemporary lifestyle. With Renault 5 Diamant I wanted to pay homage to its revolutionary design and transfer my world of shapes and colors to the world of the car”, explains Gonalons, recognized as one of the 100 best creators by the publication Architectural Digest.

For me, Renault 5 Diamant is first and foremost the emotional impact of the exterior colors that give the car a genuine and spontaneous yet sophisticated look, and the sensitive attention to references and the meaning of each element that Pierre devotes to the details. ».

The designer and Renault will also collaborate on the creation of a series of NFTs inspired by the prototype, which will be presented in September. Subsequently, both the vehicle and the NFTs will be auctioned to raise funds for the “Give Me 5” project, through which Renault wants to help young people through sport and music.
