Tesla has managed to reach an important milestone by launching the 5 millionth unit since the beginning of its activity. A symbolic moment that has also had two other unexpected protagonists, and that is that the unit that has rounded out the figures has been the new Model 3, which has also left the brand’s currently most important plant, that of China.
The evolution of Tesla’s production is significant, for example, it took Elon Musk 12 years to see the millionth unit come off its lines, and only 18 months to produce its second million.
Then things accelerated and Tesla needed just 11 fewer months to go from its 2 millionth unit to 3 million, seven months to go from 3 million to 4 million, and six months from 4 to 5 million.
The 5 millionth unit has also emerged from a plant that has become one of the pillars of Tesla’s growth. Tesla’s Shanghai factory, which began construction on January 7, 2019, came into operation at the end of that same year. A frenetic pace of construction has allowed us not only to get it up and running but also to scale production quickly.
Giga Shanghai saw its one millionth unit roll off its production lines on August 13, 2022, less than three years after production began at the plant. On September 6 of this year, the plant saw its 2 millionth model go out of production.

A dynamic that seems to have no end, in addition to constantly working to expand the capacities of its factories in Germany and China, Tesla is also improving the capacities of the Texas plant.
At the same time, the American manufacturer is working on closing the paperwork for the new facility in Mexico, which may become the largest and most productive for the North American brand and should begin construction in early 2024.
