The best electric cars under 20,000 euros

A new course is approaching and many are looking for an electric car to face a new stage. But the prices of the brand new models are still somewhat high, with many communities pending even to activate the aid plan. That is why the second-hand market can be an interesting alternative, and these are some of the most interesting options of the moment.

In this case, we have focused on the most interesting models with prices from 12,000 euros to not exceeding the barrier of 20,000 euros. A range where we can find multiple options whose interest will depend not only on the characteristics and the price but on the needs of each one.

Renault ZOE ZE40

Renault ZOE ZE40

For 12,500 euros, for example, we can take home a unit of the Renault ZOE ZE40. A popular model that has seen how its prices have been gradually falling until it is placed in a most interesting barrier, and that stands out for having a 4.08-meter long body, with space for up to five tight occupants, and a fairly wide trunk of 338 liters.

In this case, it is a unit from 2017, with 53,559 kilometers and an Intense finish. The intermediate one includes, for example, automatic keyless locking, rear parking camera, and little else since the Renault compact has not been characterized precisely by being a highly equipped model.

It should be noted that it is a unit with a useful 41 kWh battery, formed as we remember by LG cells cooled by forced air, which achieves a real autonomy of between 200 and 250 km with each charge, and that with this mileage if the treatment has been minimally well, it should have a capacity still over 90%. It has a charging system of up to 22 kW in alternating current, and it does not have fast charging.

A model that is available for just 12,500 euros with the battery owned and is located in Sabadell, counting the dealership with home delivery to the entire peninsula.

For those who want “a little more” the version with a useful 52 kWh battery is also available, some 300 km of real autonomy, in registered 2020 units and with prices starting at 17,700 euros. A more modern version inside, with better finishes, and a higher power engine, 110 hp instead of the 92 hp of the ZE 40.

FIAT 500

FIAT 500

For those looking for something more compact and modern, the FIAT 500 may be a good alternative. In its access version, with a 95 hp (70 kW) engine and a 23.8 kWh battery, 180 km WLTP, which in real life can stay around 150 km.

A model with a timeless design that compensates for its low autonomy with its charging capacity in alternating current at 11 kW, and at 50 kW in direct current, and which is an option for those looking for a smaller car, 3.57 meters long, and more flirtatious visually.

A rival of the Renault Twingo ZE, but with a much more attractive design and a higher-quality interior and equipment, which can already be found with prices starting at 16,990 euros.

If you want to opt for the more powerful version, 87 kW (118 hp) and a 37.3 kWh useful battery, 320 km of WLTP autonomy, or about 250 real km, then the investment will have to rise to 22,500 euros.

Nissan LEAF 40

Nissan LEAF 40

One step above the previous ones, we can already find models with more autonomy, but with contained prices. This is the case of the Nissan LEAF 40, which offers us a larger model, 4.49 meters long, space for five occupants, and a trunk that reaches 435 liters.

In favor of this version is the improvement in the useful life of its batteries, which seems that despite not having cooling, they have managed to leave behind the serious problems of the previous generation in the aspect of degradation. But this lack of cooling affects a fast charge that suffers from high temperatures, dropping power and therefore lengthening the sessions.

Otherwise, it is a powerful model, 110 kW (150 hp) with 37 kWh of useful battery, which allows it to achieve a WLTP range of 270 km, or about 225 km real. A model capable of accessing alternating loads of up to 7 kW, and in continuous to 46 kW peak. A load that is carried out through a port with CHAdeMO format, which is clearly in decline in Europe where the CCS Combo has been imposed.

A LEAF 40 that we can find with prices starting at 18,950 euros, which is an interesting figure for those who want to enter the world of electric cars without a large investment, but with a slightly larger proposal than the previous ones.

BMW i3

BMW i3

Still, below 20,000 euros we can find a different model. The BMW i3 has been one of the most different electric cars that we have seen since the beginning of this modern era. A German compact that leaves no one indifferent because of its appearance, but that hides inside a system that has been unanimously praised for its quality.

And is that the i3 despite being a light car, the i3 has a powerful propulsion system with 125 kW (170 hp) of power. Something that translates into low consumption, but devastating acceleration and recoveries.

To this is added a battery that in this version, 94 Ah, has 27.2 useful kWh, which allows it to achieve a range of 245 km WLTP, which remained in just under 200 real km. A battery made up of Samsung cells, cooled by liquid, which should give it a very long life.

On the negative side of the i3, it should be noted that fast recharging was an option and that many units do not bring it. The same for recharging in alternating at 11 kW, which means that each unit may be different from the rest. But the usual thing in a 2018 model is that it had only a 7 kW load. Also add that it only has 4 seats, and a trunk of just 260 liters.

That if, luckily it is already possible to get a unit of this different electric from only 18,990 euros, which is almost half of its original price.
