US Army Buys GMC Hummer EV For Testing

The Humvee ( High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle ) is one of the most famous and well-known US military vehicles globally. It has been successfully used in most of the military campaigns that have seen the United States as protagonists: from Afghanistan to Iraq via Panama and Somalia. Its success has been so striking, that the Stars and Stripes army has decided to continue betting on this rocky off-road vehicle, putting its electric alter-ego to the test: the brand new GMC Hummer EV.

Although the transition of private individuals to electricity is a fairly consolidated fact overseas, for government agencies the transition occurs much more slowly. Faced with a fait accompli, for the American Armed Forces – Hummer EV – it, therefore, seemed the most obvious and sensible choice. According to the first documents that arrived in the press: ” the main purpose of the program is to identify a new battery electric vehicle (whether light or heavy) capable of responding to the needs of the American government ”.

Although this premise does not fully clarify which use or test the vehicle is intended for, the same document specifies that: ” (the US Army) expresses the need to incorporate a multi-role and adaptable vehicle into its arsenal, which reduces the dependence on fossil fuels of the US Army, both in an operational and garrison context. The tests the GMC Hummer EV will undergo will also demonstrate the ability to effectively generate, store and distribute protection and life support to soldiers. “

Leveraging GMC’s advanced technology, this series of tests and trials will demonstrate to the US Army what our electric super-SUV is capable of. The ideal opportunity to prove that the technology behind the Hummer EV project can be used for future defense needs, both at the garrison level and in the context of war, ” said GM Defense President Steve Dumont. At the moment, GM Defense has already won several government contracts related to the military sector. So we just have to wait, hoping that the Hummer EV is up to the legendary Humvee!
