VW ID.7 First impressions of the electric Passat

After being announced days ago, the Volkswagen ID.7 makes its first public appearance. The electric sedan leaves behind its stage as a prototype to promise a range of up to 700 kilometers.

The largest technology fair on the planet, CES in Las Vegas, has gained a lot of weight in the launch schedules of car manufacturers. Surrounded by a great atmosphere of novelty, many brands choose to launch some of their most important models, mainly electric, on American soil. Continuing with this small tradition, the Volkswagen ID.7 is presented in society, although still covered in a thick camouflage that prevents us from fully seeing what its design will be like. However, Volkswagen has shown us the first data and they are very good.

Until now, we had known it as the Volkswagen ID. Aero. Introduced in the middle of last year, the average saloon has always had a direct rival in mind: the Tesla Model 3. Although it was an open secret, Volkswagen has changed the official name for the production version, opting for the ID.7 name. A name much more in line with the rest of the family. It will become the company’s sixth global model, the fifth in Europe after ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and ID. Buzz.

Broadly speaking, the design of the Volkswagen ID.7 is very sharp and aerodynamic. Its profile clearly shows a very well-drawn coupé line with a low attack front that allows it to offer a drag coefficient of only 0.23. Regarding its proportions, taking into account that it will be the direct rival of the Model 3, we assume an approximate length of 4.7 meters, Volkswagen has not yet confirmed it. What it has communicated is a long wheelbase of 2.97 meters, 10 centimeters more than its American opponent.

Under that attractive body covered in an interactive camouflage vinyl, the MEB platform of the Volkswagen is hidden. The same structure that powers the rest of the ID fleet. Although no data has been provided about the battery, neither composition nor capacity, the Volkswagen ID.7 has announced an approximate range of 700 kilometers in the WLTP approval cycle. This an excellent piece of information that, if confirmed in the certification process, will mean beating the rest of the rivals in the category, including the Hyundai Ioniq 6, the third in contention in this commercial battle.

Volkswagen knows perfectly well that its current multimedia system leaves much to be desired both in quality and behavior. The head of the company promised to fix the problem in future releases, and it will be. The ID.7 presents a completely renewed system that focuses all the attention on a large 15-inch multimedia screen. The equipment has been made simpler and more intuitive, reducing the number of touches required to operate all the functionalities. A small digital instrument panel and a Head-Up Display with augmented reality will be added to the new screen. All these technologies will be released by the Volkswagen ID.3.

Over the next few days, from January 5 to 8, the Volkswagen ID.7 will be on display at the Volkswagen stand. There it will capture the attention of those attending the show, although there are still a few months left for the saloon to complete its development.

The Germans have reported that its final launch is scheduled for the second quarter of the year, with the entry of spring. Its arrival at dealerships will take place at the turn of the summer in the three main markets: North America, Europe, and China. The price is, for now, unknown, although in Spain the rates should start at figures close to 50,000 euros.
