The big three US companies General Motors, Ford, and Jeep are still lagging when it comes to offering electric cars. This even applies to large SUVs, which should be the domain of US manufacturers. However, Jeep will soon be launching a large electric SUV with the Wagoneer S.
The brand’s new top model will have around 450 kW and will therefore sprint to reference speed in around 3.5 seconds. The range will be around 600 km, writes Autocar, without naming a source. According to Jeep, the name Wagoneer S is only a temporary designation; the final name has not yet been revealed.
The car will come onto the market in 2024, but initially only in the USA – the car is also primarily aimed at US customers. But the model, which is over five meters long, will also reach us: limited numbers will come to Europe from 2025. The Jeep Wagoneer S is intended to compete in the premium segment and take on the BMW iX.
Jeep’s new electric car range will have four models, including the entry-level Jeep Avenger, which we already sell, the Wagoneer S, and the Jeep Recon. The fourth model is not yet known.
While the Avenger is still based on the old eCMP platform, the Wagoneer S is one of the first Stellantis models to be based on the new STLA Large platform. The same goes for the Recon, a kind of electric version of the Wrangler. The two newcomers should share most of the components. The Recon is also expected to have similar launch dates as the Wagoneer S. A year ago it said: “Production of this global SUV will begin in North America in 2024 and will be sold in key markets around the world, including Europe.”
Batteries and drives will probably be similar for the Recon and the Wagoneer S. However, it is not yet known which units will be installed. The STLA Large platform, which was introduced in 2021, supports batteries with 101 to 118 kWh storage capacity and drive axles with 150 to 330 kW. Two of these are installed in all-wheel drive vehicles so that 450 kW is easily achievable. Stellantis stated the platform’s maximum range in 2021 as 800 km.
The Jeep Wagoneer S was introduced a year ago, together with the Avenger and the Recon. A model called Wagoneer has been sold in the USA since 2021. It is a 5.45 meter long, eight-seater “full-size SUV”. The Grand Wagoneer model, which is also offered, is not larger, just better equipped. However, there is also a 5.76-meter long version called the Wagoneer L or Grand Wagoneer L. All models have rear-wheel drive as standard, and an all-wheel drive system is available for an additional charge.
