The independent organization Insurance Institute for Highways has just published a report that talks, among other things, about the level of car thefts in the United States. A statistic is that electric cars lead among the least affected, and at the top of the list are Tesla models.
But why are they the ones that are stolen the least? The data shows that both the Tesla Model 3 and the Model Y, the Nissan LEAF, Model S and Model. The reasons for achieving this good rating according to the report are not even in its security systems, cameras, and other deterrent elements.
The reason is much less technological and has to do with the characteristic parking patterns of electric cars, which are normally parked at night in well-lit and relatively safer areas. This implies that the need to charge the battery provides an additional layer of security to this type of vehicle, since these places are usually safer and monitored, which deters possible theft.
Many owners have their vehicle chargers inside the garage, and they have to put the vehicle inside to charge it. Something that was often not done with combustion models, leaving the vehicle parked outside the home for convenience, which makes them more attractive to other people’s friends.
An issue that, according to the report, may bode well for the potential buyer of an electric car, which may add to the arguments in favor of this type of involuntary safety advantages to the already attractive benefits of lower cost and lower emissions.
