The countdown to the launch of the new Opel Astra 2021 has now begun. Even though the popular compact has released an important aesthetic restyling a few months ago, including even new engines, the transition to its sixth generation is already a fact and will take place throughout this next year 2021. It is the definitive moment to pass the page and enter directly to be part of the PSA group in its entirety.

And it is that almost a year and a half ago we were able to confirm the news: the new Opel Astra would already be a complete development within the French group, definitively abandoning the platform of its previous owner, General Motors. This was confirmed directly by Opel itself.

Through an agreement reached with its works council and with the German union IG Metall, Opel announced then that PSA would invest ” in the Rüsselsheim factory to once again host the production of the next-generation Astra from 2021. ” And that moment is approaching.

OPEL ASTRA 2021: WITH PSA’S EMP2 PLATFORM

Always confirmed as one of the most successful and popular vehicles of the German brand, the Opel Astra 2021 is already in the last phase of tests developed therefore on the EMP2 platform of the PSA Group, the same one from which the latest Peugeot 308s already come out. , 3008 and 5008 or the Citroën C5 Aircross. The adoption of this new architecture is also particularly important since, as Opel itself confirmed, “it will also allow an electrified version of the C-segment best-seller in Rüsselsheim to be manufactured”.

With this announcement, it seems therefore evident that one of the big stars in the compact range will be a new Opel Astra plug-in hybrid that, taking advantage of what we already know at Peugeot, adopts a 1.6 PureTech gasoline engine and an electric drive, to deliver up to 225 CV of power and offer a 100% electric autonomy of at least 50 kilometers.

In addition to this version, the German compact will continue to bet on the gasoline range for the time being, with the 3-cylinder PureTech blocks and particle filter opening the offer with powers of between 130 and 155 HP. Above, a 4- cylinder PureTech could also be accommodated, already exceeding this performance as a superior version.

Although many brands are already starting to abandon diesel production, especially in the lower market segments, the Opel Astra is more than likely to offer some variant in this regard at the beginning, betting on the 1.5 BlueHDI engine with 130 hp and, perhaps, on a higher 2.0 BlueHDi more powerful.

ASTRA 2021: NEW FRONT VIZOR

On an aesthetic level, the new Opel Astra will present a fairly renewed image where, above all, the new Vizor front panel that the brand is already extending to all its new products will stand out. We have seen it, for example, recently in the Opel Crossland 2021 or the new Mokka, providing a visual sensation of much greater width. In this article, you can see it in our first recreation of the model, signed by our specialist Schulte.

Probably available in a conventional version of doors and a Sports Tourer family body, inside the new Opel Astra 2021 will slightly improve its space and habitability, but above all, it will update an already more modern environment. With an interior practically already digitized, the compact will also debut the latest in connectivity and driving assistance systems. Throughout next year we will be able to know him officially.
