Renault Twingo returns 100% electric, will cost less than €20,000

Renault seems to also be stepping on the accelerator with its strategy regarding cheap electric cars, and they better do so after having presented the Citroën ë-C3 and with the unstoppable advance of Chinese brands. Surprising the world, the French brand has just presented a key product in society: the new generation Renault Twingo, which will be electric and will completely change the concept of the generation that is still in force because it will cost less than 20,000 euros. Also, Renault had better  ‘change the third’, because the current Twingo has gone completely unnoticed since its original launch.

Although you probably thought that the Renault Twingo no longer existed, the reality is that today it is sold but it is not sold at all. The current generation will die in 2024, but the good news is that there will be a new Renault Twingo in 2026 and, this time, it seems that the French brand is going to get its approach right. They have already officially announced that it will cost less than 20,000 euros and, in addition, the brand has assured that it will be the most efficient electric vehicle in its category. This a rather risky statement, especially because for those dates the arrival of a good number – and variety – of cheap, small-sized electric cars is scheduled.

Renault Twingo will come 100% electric in 2026 and will challenge its competitors

Renault’s CEO is the one who has revealed all these details of the new Renault Twingo 2026 at an event around Ampere, its division focused on electric vehicles. What we can advance about this new generation of the Renault Twingo, beyond the fact that it will make us wait until 2026, is that it will be based on this concept car that they have shown and that it will debut the  AmpR Small platform. However, this should not lead us into error, because in reality, it is still the CMF-B EV platform.

For now, they have only limited themselves to revealing its launch year, ensuring that it will be  ‘the most efficient in its class’ and pointing out that its starting price will be below 20,000 euros. In addition, it is true, that they have also taught us what its design will be like or, at least, what design language concept the final product will be based on. We also know, thanks to this, that its design and development have already started. However, they have not yet given key technical data regarding the battery and its range, as well as its power.

The  Renault Twingo 2026 will be positioned below the Renault 5 in every way, both in the technical section and in its price. We must not forget that, officially, the French brand has already indicated that the  Renault 5 will cost less than 25,000 euros, at least, in its entry-level version. Now, among other things, it will be interesting to know what battery technology they are going to use because until now Renault has opposed LFP batteries, which is currently the cheapest technology available to electric car manufacturers.

At the moment there is no official information on this, but it could use a sodium battery. After all, we already know that  Dacia is exploring this technology and that, as we mentioned before, the French brand has refused to use LFP batteries. And of course, for such a cheap electric car it will be difficult to fit, within the production costs, an expensive NCM battery like the ones they are using in the rest of their products.
