Yesterday, Volvo presented in style the new EX90, a large electric SUV called to replace the long-lived XC90. In addition, the Swedish firm took advantage of this important occasion to launch the first preview of its future access model, an electric SUV smaller than the current XC40 Recharge.
In the image shared by Volvo, it can be seen that his new baby will adopt the EX90 lighting scheme, with pilots divided into two sections. Its rear will flee from the fastback design of the C40 Recharge, betting on a more vertical aspect. However, we should not rule out that later you receive a “coupé” variant.
Why do we say this? Because Volvo’s latest creation will derive directly from smart #1, which will receive a brother of this type (smart #3) in the short term. Everything indicates that the Swedish will be called EX30, while the “coupe” could adopt the name EC30; however, the fact that the name EX30 has been registered and EC30 does not make us think that, unlike the smart, the Volvo will only be available with a single body.
The Volvo EX30 will be made in China and will use the Geely group’s SEA-E (SEA Entry) platform. Most likely, its technical specifications are very similar to those of smart #1, including its dimensions (4.27 meters long, 1.82 meters wide, 1.64 meters high, and 2.75 meters distance between axes).

The smart #1 is currently only available in a single version, which combines a 272 hp (200 kW) motor with a 66 kWh capacity battery pack, thanks to which it homologates 440 km WLTP of range. It is a rear-wheel drive vehicle. As for the load, it can reach a maximum of 150 kW in direct current (10-80% in 30 minutes).
In the short term, the range will be completed with the arrival of a Brabus version, which will add a second propeller on the front axle, raising its power to 428 hp (315 kW). Thanks to this set, the smart #1 Brabus will be able to complete the 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. The Volvo EX30 should have a similar range.
Among the rivals of our protagonist will be the DS 3 E-TENSE, the Jeep Avenger, the MINI Aceman, and the smart #1 itself; in addition, in the future the Alfa Romeo Brennero will also be added. Against them, the Volvo EX30 will stand out through a luxurious cabin inspired by Scandinavian homes and a strong commitment to active and passive safety.
