GMC introduces the electric version of its Sierra pickup. To start with, there is the well-equipped GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. Like the Chevrolet Silverado EV from the same group, it has a range of 640 km. With 555 kW, however, it offers significantly more power than its sister model with a maximum of 488 kW.
GMC is something like the Volkswagen brand for the VW Group. With the Sierra, GMC is bringing the third electric “truck” onto the market – after the GMC Hummer EV and the GMC Hummer EV SUV. All three are based (like the Silverado EV) on General Motors’ Ultium platform.
GMC does not provide any information on the storage capacity of the battery; the Hummer EV was also covered in this regard, as was Chevrolet with the Silverado EV. But as mentioned, the range is 640 km – an estimated value according to the demanding American EPA standard.
The electric motors on the front and rear axles ensure an all-wheel drive system output of 754 hp (555 kW) and 1,064 Nm of torque. This should allow you to sprint to 100 km/h in around 4.5 seconds. The payload is 590 kilos, the maximum trailer load is an impressive 4.3 tons.
It is charged via a 19.2 kW onboard charger. In addition, the 800-volt system offers a fast charging function for allegedly up to 350 kW direct current. This should be able to recharge electricity for about 160 km in ten minutes – as with the Silverado.
With the optional Power Station Pro, the traction battery can deliver up to 10.2 kW of power to external consumers – via up to 10 sockets. Another electric car can also be charged. In combination with a bidirectional charger, your own house can be supplied with electrical energy for up to three weeks in the event of a power failure.
Five driving modes allow the drive to be adjusted. They have the descriptive names Standard, Tow/Haul, Offroad, My Mode, and Maximum Power. In addition, the strength of the recuperation can be adjusted ( rain-on-demand ) – up to one-pedal driving.
The electric Sierra has air suspension (Air Ride Adaptive Suspension) with the ability to raise or lower the car by about 5 cm. Like the GMC Hummer, the Sierra has four-wheel steering with the ability to crab walk. At low speeds, the rear wheels are turned in the same direction as the front wheels, enabling a diagonal crab movement.
Inside there is a touchscreen with a diagonal of no less than 16.8 inches, which is installed here for the first time in portrait mode. There is also a configurable driver’s display with an 11-inch diagonal and a color head-up display with a 14-inch diagonal.
When you get in with the electronic key in your pocket, the system turns on automatically. All you have to do is step on the brakes, shift into D and you’re good to go. You can get help from the semi-autonomous driving system Super Cruise. A fixed panorama fixed glass roof, which extends over both rows of seats, provides light in the interior.
The electric pick-up is only offered as a four-door crew cab model with a 1.80-meter-long loading area. The loading area can be expanded with a “midgate”; Objects up to 2.74 meters long can be stowed in this way, with the tailgate open it is even 3.35 meters. The backrests in the rear are divided in a ratio of 60:40 so that one passenger can be transported in addition to the surfboard or canoe.
There is also a lockable front trunk (Frunk). It has two drains so you can easily clean the storage compartment. The storage space deserves the designation eTrunk due to the presence of a 120-volt socket.
The GMC electric pick-up is built at GM Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck, where the GMC Hummer EV also rolls off the assembly line as a pick-up and SUV. Later, the Sierra EV will be assembled at GM’s Lake Orion Assembly, a plant north of Detroit.

Denali Edition 1 reservations are now open; however, delivery is not scheduled to begin until early 2024. The price is $107,000. The Sierra EV AT4 and the Sierra EV Elevation will follow in the 2025 model year. The cheapest model is said to be around $50,000.
