Tesla Model 3 or VW ID.5: Which is the best electric car?

We compare two of the most important electric cars from Tesla and Volkswagen. The new American brand against the German classic

The electric car market is booming and the commitment to family vehicles is more relevant than ever. Both in the SUV and sedan segments, we find great bets, of which we are going to compare two today: the Tesla Model 3 and the Volkswagen ID.5.

The former embodies the technology and modernity of the American manufacturer owned by Elon Musk, and the latter carries Volkswagen’s historical image as a trusted German manufacturer. Which is better?

Design

The taste for the design of these two cars will depend largely on the type of bodywork you prefer. However, it is undeniable that Tesla has a greater charm both externally and internally with particularly recognizable, stylized, and modern shapes.

The Model 3 measures 4,694 mm long, 1,849 mm wide, and 1,443 mm high with a weight of 1,931 kg and a rear trunk of 425 liters along with another in front of 117 liters. In the cabin, a huge 15-inch multimedia screen with no dashboard in favor of a head-up display.

In general, simply superb and with a wide variety of very innovative options both at the level of vehicle control and entertainment for the occupants.

The Volkswagen ID.5, on the other hand, is a fairly large SUV coupé with an appearance reminiscent of other models of the brand, especially in terms of the optics and general shapes of the car. Its measurements are 4,582 mm long, 1,852 mm wide and 1,619 mm high

Visibly larger in these last two axes than its rival and with a weight that reaches 2,242 kg in the GTX version. Although, its rear trunk capacity is much higher than that of its rival, with 549 liters expandable to 1,561 liters.

At the interior level, it stands out for its modernity and digitization, although it is still very similar to the rest of the brand’s range and to what many manufacturers do, so it does not impress in any way.

Engines

The Tesla Model 3 has a total of three versions. The standard option has a single motor located on the rear axle with a battery pack of up to 491 kilometers of autonomy, a 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds, and a maximum speed of 225 km/h.

Above are the long-range Tesla Model 3 with up to 602 kilometers of range and two motors responsible for generating the all-wheel drive. However, if maximum power is your thing, the Model 3 Performance offers the same configuration a 0 to 100 km / h in 3.3 seconds and a maximum speed of 261 km / h. Although its autonomy drops to 547 km.

The VW ID.5 has only one line of finishes called Pro, within which we find the basic version of 174 hp with up to 534 kilometers of autonomy or the VW ID.5 Pro Performance option, whose power amounts to 204 hp with the same range.

Prices

Interestingly, although both the Tesla Model 3 and the Volkswagen ID.5 do not share a body type, their prices are very similar, which makes them direct rivals. The American sedan starts at 51,990 euros and can rise at the top of the range to 64,990 euros.

On the other hand, Volkswagen costs 51,110 euros in its base version, and for the higher option the price increases slightly to 52,750 euros. Therefore, the difference is minimal between the two.

So, is the Tesla Model 3 or the Volkswagen ID.5 better? Well, considering the performance data and details such as the Tesla supercharger network … Surely the car bearing the signature of Elon Musk will win the duel.
